Confusion About Preventing Sickness
Ever wonder why there should be so much confusion about preventing sickness? You know, the kind that everyone dreads thinking about: flu-like illnesses, stomach flu, that worn-out feeling that can last for weeks. While it is unlikely that we can live our entire lives without ever experiencing one of these illnesses, it is realistic that unless a person suffers from some chronic condition which suppresses the immune system, nature has given us what we need to fight off the viruses and bacteria which can cause these illnesses. So if that’s the case, why do so many people get sick, why are there so many over the counter preparations to relieve these illnesses, and why are there so many lost days at work and school due to sickness each year?
Granted, there are many airborne pathogens out there. But what about most of them, which are transmitted by contact? We all see the plethora of hand sanitizers out there in public places and supermarkets. Overall, this is not a bad idea; after all, who knows who had their hands on that shopping cart before we grip that handle ourselves. Some of the trouble happens when we “forget” where we are and by scratching our eye, nose, face, etc. we introduce that pathogen into our body. When you get home, where do you place the shopping bags, on your kitchen counter? What about that package you received from UPS or FedEx or the mail, is that on the counter as well, where you prepare your food?
Realistically, we can’t be so paranoid about touching everything that we can’t focus on what we’re suppose to be accomplishing while we’re at the store, restaurant, restroom, school or church. That’s no fun at all. Now I’m not saying we should ignore the fact that viruses and bacteria are all around us; maintaining some level of present moment thinking is healthy.
What I am saying is that we should not fool ourselves that by using hand sanitizers and anti-bacterial cleansers we will be safe from illness. People are usually surprised to discover that about 75% of our immune system resides in our digestive system. Therefore, while trying to “disinfect” our hands is not a bad thing, ignoring that part of our body which is essential to good health is foolish and misleading. In the next few posts, I’ll talk about some things we can all do to improve the functioning of our digestive system to improve our overall health. It all begins in the mouth: chew your food well and really taste and enjoy what you are eating!
