My Nutrition Hero

One of my heroes is Dr. Russell Blaylock, a board certified neurosurgeon, who now works full time in the field of nutrition. He has written several books: “Excito-toxins, The Taste That Kills”, “Health and Nutrition Secrets That Can Save Your Life”, and “Natural Strategies for The Cancer Patient”. In addition to these excellent books, he publishes a monthly newsletter, entitled “The Blaylock Wellness Report”. What I like about Dr. Blaylock, is his thorough understanding of biochemistry and his no nonsense articulation of how many Americans create their own health risk factors. As a physician, he is very aware of the lack of training that many other physicians have about the interactions of supplements and prescription medications, not only with one another, but with vital neurochemical and biochemical reactions in our bodies. Dr. Blaylock doesn’t throw anybody under the proverbial bus, but strongly encourages everyone to take charge of their health by learning as much as possible about what it takes to be healthy.

My own beliefs about staying healthy are founded in how we accept the concept of voluntary vs. involuntary risks. Many times, we will place ourselves at risk if the risk is our own choice. If we perceive the risk as involuntary, then we want someone else to “remove” the risk for us. In reality, the degree to which we are willing to accept risk is always voluntary. You may not be able to prevent that snowstorm, flood, earthquake or other natural disaster, but you can be prepared for it by having a plan in place in case it does happen. The same thing for our health: yes, we can’t live forever, but we can make healthy choices to maximize the quality of our lives while on this earth. Now the question is, Why do some of us choose to take responsibility for our health and safety while others do not?
