Ten Tips to Lose Weight Faster

With the first day of Autumn coming upon us this week, it is a reminder that we’re entering another transitional period. Even where I live in northern New England, we still have warm, sunny days for awhile, interspersed with nights that steadily become cooler, as slow reminders of the seasonal changes which affect just about every aspect of our lives, affecting our physical and mental health. One of the natural balancing systems in Nature is Seasonal change: we need more energy (calories) to maintain homeostasis. Use the following tips to help balance your energy intake and output.

  • Stay away from calorie dense foods (overly-sweetened foods, potatoes, corn products, simple starches).
  • Eat foods which have higher metabolic values (lamb, chicken, duck, eggs, goat, eggplant, chick peas, peppers, squash, turnip, olives, figs, dates, almonds, pistachio, sesame, walnuts, pine nuts, thin grain rice, honey).
  • Use the following herbs to season your food naturally: basil, cinnamon, cardamon, cumin, cloves, garlic, ginger, curry powder, marjoram, mustard, mint and garam masala.
  • Eat foods which have strong colors to them (berries, cherries, butternut squash, carrots, broccoli, chard, yams).
  • Eat only when your are truly hungry and only enough to take away the hunger: don’t overeat.
  • Try to have one day a week to fast (avoid eating full meals, processed foods, snacks, sweets) and don’t try to “make up” the calories the next day.
  • If you are not a person who typically eats vegetables, try one new vegetable a week by roasting it in the oven rather than steaming on the stove (green beans and broccoli taste naturally sweeter cooked this way). I’ll be posting some recipes soon on how to do this.
  • Use the cooler weather to get more active, even if it’s only going for walks.
  • Make sure you get at least 7 hours of good sleep a night.
  • If you are taking medications, check with your medical provider if your medications cause weight gain, and that you are not taking a greater dose than you need. Follow you provider’s advice. If you don’t agree, get another medical opinion.
