In Memory of my friend Russell
This post continues my present focus on how personality traits affect our interaction with the current state of the economy, country, world. Also, it is dedicated to a very decent, kind man whose funeral service we attended last Saturday. Now each day, there are thousands and thousands of decent, kind individuals who pass through death into another dimension. What differentiated this man was the steadfast balance of his Christian beliefs with pragmatism, which he successfully applied to his life.
Russell was not the type of man who walked around spewing chapter and verse from the Bible, even though he was quite knowledgeable about Scripture. He preferred to live his life humbly, and by inspiring others by his actions and generosity. He had a wonderful quick wit and could be counted on for succinct one-liners which left you speechless and laughing. He cared deeply for Life, including a passion for his many pets which he regarded as part of his family. He served in the Navy as a submariner, despite being claustrophobic. He was a dedicated husband, family man and member of his church community with a strong sense of ethics and personal standards. He knew who he was, but never stopped trying to improve himself and was a voracious reader. He was an avid New England Patriots and Red Sox fan. He was the kind of guy who most people would meet and instantly be able to relate to. And now, at 55, he is gone: within a period of about five weeks.
Russell believed if people were positively reinforced for their actions, they would display more of those actions in the future. He believed that most of the problems the U.S. economy is having, is due to entitlements by Washington and other segments of the population. Just bailing out states, corporations, pension funds, etc. is only rewarding bad behavior (i.e., management), so we will get more of the same in the future. A behaviorist like Russell would say the best way to stop negative behaviors (i.e., irresponsible spending) is not bail them out nor give in to continued cries for spending: they’ll go away kicking and screaming, and it won’t be pretty, but they’ll go away.
Russell felt that the U.S. has seen its best days and that Americans (and the rest of the world) are in for some tough times ahead. That was the pragmatic side of his personality. He also believed that if people had the Faith to cooperate with one another, we would become even stronger and more unified than ever. That’s where the balance comes in: the spirituality and the hard core behaviorist. It’s the Faith, Hope and Love that can get us through the most challenging times, not immediate gratification.
Rest in Peace, Russell Ross. May your dreams for our country come to pass.
