2011: What’s Your Reality?
Now that the Holiday season is ending, are you gearing up to get back into a routine again, or ready to try out a few “resolutions”? If you’re like most people, it’s likely to be a little bit of both. If there is one benefit from the end of the year, it is a reality check on how fast time races by us. It’s paradoxical because when you’re a kid (i.e. always having fun) a month can seem like an eternity. When you reach adulthood (i.e., not always having fun), whammo: the years start to fly by. Why is that? Since the space-time continuum doesn’t change, our “reality” of space-time is a direct function of our perceptions.
The notion that the New Year should be accompanied by new habits (resolutions) suggests that we’re aware that some of our daily routines may not beneficial as we would like them to be. Any thoughts about a resolution should begin with “What exactly is my “reality?” Check out these questions before embarking on any new habits:
- If anyone I cared about has passed away in 2010, what have I learned from his/her passing?
- Have my personal goals changed from one year ago?
- Despite being a year older, is my health at least as good as it was one year ago?
- Besides work, how do I spend most of my time each day?
- Am I getting at least 7 hours of sleep a day?
- If I were making a resolution for 2012, what would it be one year from now?
- Are there any habits/routines I don’t want to change?
Understanding that we need to be realistic and pragmatic about personal goals is the best way to assimilate positive changes into our lives. As an example, think of it like this: if a person wants to lose weight, one of the worst things he/she could do is to “go on a diet”, because if a person “goes on a diet”, then at some time down the road, he/she will “go off a diet”. All the old food choices and quantities are resumed, resulting in greater weight than before “the diet”. “Losing weight” is a concept that really means a person needs to change his/her lifestyle and reality, to gradually incorporate several permanent changes in a daily routine to become healthier. Make sure your resolutions are realistic with your abilities and level of commitment, and have a beneficial effect on others as well as yourself, or else it’s unlikely you will succeed.
Maybe a good resolution for all of us is to start enjoying life each day, so that when 2012 rolls around, we can look back on some really fond memories and experiences. Each day brings opportunities for positive thoughts and interactions with family, friends, pets, co-workers and strangers. It’s all in how we choose to live our lives. We create our own realities. So why not start with the resolution to enjoy Time: you decide how you want to spend your journey through the cosmos. What better resolution is there than that?

My reality for 2011 is that I am what I am. For 2011 to stay present & spend my energy being my best and not worrying about expectations of the world and friends that share my days. While this sounds pretty silly I want to honor the person I have become and continue to grow into the best person I can be.
That reality is definitely attainable! Go for it, girl!
