Diet and Depression

Depression can affect anyone at any time, but recent research suggests that eating certain foods can increase the amount of inflammation in the brain. This results in the release of powerful excito-toxins, which are associated with serious mental illnesses like schizophrenia, depression and impulse control disorders.

Avoiding foods that contain artificial sweeteners, omega-6 oils, artificial coloring and flavors can help to prevent these illnesses. Studies have shown that when prison inmates are given a multivitamin and mineral supplement to prisoners, aggressiveness, disruptive and antisocial behaviors were decreased by half! Similar studies have shown comparable results in children’s problematic behaviors.

The B vitamins shown to be very effective in reducing depression are:
Vitamin B1    (thiamine)
Vitamin B2    (riboflavin)
Vitamin B6    (pyridoxine)
Folate
Vitamin B12    (methylcobalamin)

Vitamin D3 and Magnesium are also efficacious in treating depression through nutrition.
