Our Infatuation with Aging Celebrities
What is it about a woman’s chronological age that captures the public’s interest? In the past week, the ages of Madonna, Sophia Loren, Betty White and Jenny Jones seemed to provoke the interest of the public. Go figure. Why is it that there isn’t much interest in the ages of many starlets in their twenties? OK, we know they are in their twenties and most of them look like they’re twenty-something. But if a woman takes care of herself, exercises, eats right, doesn’t abuse her body or mind and looks good, but has been around for awhile, why should people care? Is there some age bias out there, that if you’ve been in the media for over a period of time then people have to know your age to re-evaluate your worthiness to remain popular?
I’m hoping that the interest has more to do with the public’s recognition that these women look great, are still vibrant and productive, and that they can be role models for all women who want to be healthy and look good through their middle years and beyond. Priscilla Presley, Cher, Raquel Welch and Suzanne Somers, to name a few, are women who clearly are proud of their ages and their accomplishments. They have all had their share of challenges in life but have learned that by staying focused, having a positive attitude, and working hard, they have overcome personal difficulties. They still have that special energy to continue to advance their images and be able to enjoy life. You may ask, “But how do they do it?” I don’t know the specifics, but I do know there are three basic “rules” to follow: 1) stay focused on goals which are realistic; 2) recognize negative people and situations and find a way to insulate yourself from them; 3) believe in yourself as a force for positive change.
We all move forward through the time-space continuum and there is no turning back. We all will grow older, but the aging process can be slowed down by knowing how to balance the peaks and valleys of daily living. Sometimes there are huge personal disruptions in our lives, that can leave us feeling devastated emotionally, physically and financially. Giving up would only lead to certain failure. That’s when it’s helpful to look outside ourselves for the simple beauty around us, and what Nature is teaching us every day. Change is inevitable, in fact, life is a series of constant change (not in the present political sense). Accepting this and searching for the opportunities of new personal growth is the way to stay young in mind and spirit.
